I agree that he deserved it, but I think he's still a tragic figure. Not in the colloquial sense of "something terrible happened to an innocent person" but in the dramatic sense.

I'd compare it to Faust, actually. He was warned that he would go to hell if he made deal with devil, very specifically, and he did it anyway, and that's exactly what happened... and it's still a tragedy.

Tragedy isn't about what you 'deserve,' it's about a character being brought down by his/her own flaws. Lear was a jerk but I don't think he deserved what he got (though Light certainly did).
