22. I see what you mean, but IMHO Light's really much more pathetic than tragic. His hubris isn't anything really special--he could be the twin of hundreds of other dumb arrogant kids right out of high school. Even his character design's weirdly generic--he's handsome, intelligent, and successful, yes, but he's also such an everyman it hurts--his schooling, his family, everything about him--he's exceptional only in quantity and not in quality. And then the show/the manga take such great delight in making him look like a delusional lunatic or an idiot at every opportunity. The dramatic potato chip eating? The silly slapstick routines with Ryuk, the crazy AAAAIIIIIIRRRRR faces? There's a reason he's a silly 4chan meme--Light's too laughable to be tragic, and I think it's entirely intentional on the part of the author, artist, and animators.

Light finally dies pitifully begging for his life, a very un-heroic (or tragic-heroic) death. He even draws no larger lesson from his own fate, there's no classic moment of anagnorisis or realization. It doesn't once occur to him to question the fear and death that he himself had already inflicted on so many others, even if only to then assert proudly to the end that he absolutely was right to do as he did. No, he goes down about as mindlessly terrified as an animal, all his crazy rhetoric and rationalizations gone, pleading pathetically right up until the last moment. (In the manga, at least.)

I guess I've always seen the 'point' of Death Note (above all else) to be the arbitrary meaninglessness of life and the cold inhumanity of the universe. Good and evil and brilliant and stupid men and all their grandiose plans and sincere moral beliefs all come to the same end. There's no real place for grand tragedy in a universe like that--it's an existential wasteland in the face of which everything is equally trivial.
