...that still gets under my skin:

"Peruse."

I've never encountered anyone who used "perusing" in place of plain old "reading" who didn't come off as annoyingly affected and pretentious.

Aw, I say "peruse" sometimes. :( Usually if I'm more just skimming rather than outright reading, but still.

Then I'll assume you're the exception that proves the rule...;-p

Weirdly enough, apparently "peruse" can refer to cursory skimming or thorough reading.

I still tend to associate it with people who post on EtiquetteHell and want to sound especially genteel.
