I hear this song every single morning on the country station I'm forced to listen to at work, so I'm really super sick of it right now.

After a couple months in a row, I'm convinced the narrator is one step away from becoming Buffalo Bill-esque towards the other girl in the song, just so she can be close to the other girl's boyfriend.

... That went way overboard, but if you had to hear this song every single day for the last few months, you'd start to think crazy conspiracy theories about this song, too.

Stupid thing to be annoyed about a song but I hate how it misuses the term 'girl crush'. If it's romantic or sexual it's just called a crush.

I think gender reversed would have the same numbers of fans, tbh.

Especially if there were 2 or more guys in the band, they'd instantly have a following that outmatched One Direction's.

idk, I think the meaning of the song is up for interpretation. To me, the narrator believes that she wants to do all of these crazy things to be like the other woman because it would make her more attractive to the man, but after listening to the lyrics it seems more like the narrator is genuinely attracted to the woman and is in denial about it. It kind of reminds me of the song Jolene where the narrator spends the entire song very lovingly describing another woman ("Your smile is like a breath of spring / Your voice is soft like summer rain") while begging her not to take away her boyfriend and it's like "are you sure that you don't just want to bang Jolene instead?"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-29 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Like, those are two fucking great interpretations, but they're just not the way that the songs were originally written or (in the case of Jolene) have mostly been performed

they're just not

(Anonymous) 2015-06-29 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Yeah, for some reason I thought that the artist gave a more ambiguous answer when asked for the meaning of the song (like a lot do), but I just googled it and you're right that they flat out said that it's "about a girl saying, you know, ‘Why do you love her and not me?'." That's kind of a bummer; I was hoping that they would leave it up for interpretation. Ah well, at least I still have my personal interpretation

(Anonymous) 2015-06-29 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Gosh you sure are pretty, Jolene!"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
only slightly related, but I love the sound of "Jolene", just not the content. It's a really haunting song, which I love, but the content is just...pathetic to me. One woman begging another to tone down her sex appeal so her cheating man doesn't keep going after her?

Yeah sure because that guy it the one you want.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-29 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So I haven't heard the song before, and I kind of skimmed this secret, and the weirdness of the sentiment in the quotes plus the gender flipping confused me, so I was kind of like "What's the big deal", and it wasn't until I went to Youtube to listen to the fucking thing that I realized it was actually about the girl fucking the other girl to get the boyfriend, and not making out with the boyfriend to get the other girl

And for some reason, I find it much, much stupider and grosser that way

(Anonymous) 2015-06-29 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That song grosses me out, too! It's just creepy! I'm pretty attracted to both sexes, but I want nothing to do with that song. c_c

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'd never heard of this song before this secret, so I just looked it up on YouTube and wow, what a boring song. I couldn't even pay attention to the lyrics because of how utterly dull the melody was. Do people actually like this crap?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I hate this song. When I first heard her sing "I've got a girl crush" I was expecting lesbians and I was majorly disappointed.

I had only heard the title so when I actually listened to the song and realized it was not about genuine female attraction I was incredibly disappointed. Then I got annoyed because "What you're describing is not a crush!", and also the singer was quite good but the song itself was blah.

Lol yeah. I was looking up the top pop songs the other day and I saw that title and I was like "I bet that doesn't fetishize lesbians in any way at all." I haven't listened to it and I don't want to.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I've never heard this song but it sounds like something I would hate... I am a lesbian and generally I hate songs like this. But of course the mainstream media loves them some girl on girl fanservice.

Yeah, never heard of this OP, but chiming in to the chorus of 'sounds like something I'd hate' -- like that stupid I Kissed A Girl song.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
"I Kissed a Girl" from Katy Perry is awful garbage.

"I Kissed a Girl" from Jill Sobule, however, is wonderful 90s magic. and I will hear nothing against it.

I always think of this song as kinda "Single White Female" where the one girl wants to become the other so the guy will like her and it creeps me out a bit.

I thought you were talking about this song for a sec:

I MISS WHEN COUNTRY WAS ONLY MILDLY SHITTY

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure the general consensus is that this song is gross trash

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
This is actually WORSE than all the bro country out right now, a thought that makes me twitchy to contemplate.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-30 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
UGH this song made me so mad, when I first heard it! No part of these lyrics describe a "girl crush"! I also really hate how so much of language appropriates terms for female love, and makes them seemingly inconsequential when it's ACTUALLY females who love females.

Sigh.

Thank god, I don't have to listen to it all the time...

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I have hated this song since the first time I heard it - definitely a misleading title and I went on a big rant about it when I heard that there were some radio stations banning it because of some warped sense of "omg lesbians" when it's not even about a girl crush to begin with and ughhhh
