Great decisions in your life?

[personal profile] caerbannog 2015-06-29 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm having a giant thankful moment. Like I'm so glad I applied to that uni because I never thought I'd be accepted and I'm so glad I did that class that set me onto my career path and the circumstances around her could be better but my dog was totally worth the wait and all the work I'm putting into her.

Also really glad I was convinced to try cheesecake because holy shit amazing.

What are things in your life, big or small, that you're so glad you did?

Moved away from home to another city, when I was 15 to go to a boarding school to study writing, even if that meant leaving all my friends behind. I no longer keep contact with those friends (that's a whole another story), but I've got plenty of new ones and they're awesome, I got some amazing education and also my parents started a divorce that started out civil but turned very nasty very soon on my first year in the boarding school. I'm so glad I wasn't living at home then.

National Novel Writing Month. I still have no idea why the idea appealed to me when I first signed up. I had never really tried to write anything and never really wanted to. But it turned out to be so much fun and now it's a big part of my life and I've got people who call me prolific.

Picking up knitting and crocheting too. I've met a lot of people through it and some of them are good friends now, and I love being able to make people happy by making stuff for them.

Both of these things have been great for my depression. Being able to look at a tangible achievement, to point to something and say "this is what I did today".

convinced to try cheesecake

Did you have internet access under the rock? Was the rent low?

I didn't try cheesecake until I was 18. I have problems with food and eating so...yeah. I still don't like it and prefer actual cake with cream cheese frosting. Shoot me dead.

There is no excuse. Any last words? Cigarette, perhaps?

Ah yes, my last words. Cheesecake has the consistency of a candle! The Cheesecake Factory is overrated! New York cheesecake is not good either!!!

Uh oh. I agree with your last words.

Execution cancelled.

Not sure what cheesecake has to do with internet? But Google wasn't around back then...

I was a suspicious kid who couldn't wrap her mind around a CHEESEcake so ignored it until it was basically shoved in my face and discovered the joy.

lol I was implying you were living under a rock, silly.

It was very affectionate though.

Dropping out during my first year of high school. At the time I was, and had been for a couple years, super depressed, so around Christmas time I came to a point where I just couldn't go on any more and dropped out.

That gave me about half a year to figure out things, to get better, and I really don't want to think about how things would have gone if I had stuck with it as I would have had a breakdown sooner or later, and I feel that it actually came at a "perfect" point of time, if there ever is one for breakdowns.

So come autumn, I was in a much better place, I started going to a school with a great creative program, and I made some friends that I hope are for life. I feel like everything just worked out quite well, and I feel like I'm a better person for it.

Oh god yes. Sometimes the better choice is ditching something (I dropped from my first uni degree really quickly) and it was the best relief as I'd have been miserable if I stuck with it D:

Glad things worked out for you C:

Was convinced to try caviar. Did not regret.

For a bigger thing: decided to start writing fanfic on a whim in my late teens, met the person who is now my fiancé literally that day.

I have similar feelings about my decision to apply to a certain college (if I hadn't gone I'd never have met the person who I can pretty much thank for my entire professional development/heck, most of my personal development). Also cheesecake. Was very intimidated and put off by the notion of cream cheese. Took the plunge. Goddamn delicious.

But mainly at the end of a rough semester I made an LJ account and started writing a buttload of fanfic and thereby ended up meeting my future wife. So that's a good tiny decision that led to some really great big ones.
