Sadly, you don't have to be extremely sheltered to have weird misconceptions of how mundane things work. A lot people are ignorant about basic subjects, and even though we live in an age of unprecedented information sharing and access to books, etc. they don't necessarily take advantage of that.

Especially in the US with our public school systems the way they are with regard to sex.
