What is your opinion on the "morality" of suicide? I find it completely ridiculous that society and individuals label it as selfish and greedy, but also provide terrible mental health resources and very little actual support. What are your thoughts?

None that need airing on an internet forum about tv shows and shit for the 1000th time

I hate that people do it, but I think we are inhumane to them and others in the way we try to stop it.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you have little to none if you broadcast it all over your blog for notes/attention/publicity, such as I've seen on Tumblr.

You're not going to do it, you're looking for quick asspats, and you're being gross.

Don't be shitty!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah SOME of them might be attention seeking, but one or two could be legit and the person is crying out for real help.

Before you say "they should seek it IRL" or some other shit, they may live in abusive environments where they get ignored or hurt worse if they ask for help or call the suicide hotline.

You just DO NOT KNOW and it's not fair to judge.

I've stopped up my bleeding heart years ago and rightfully assume that 95% of the outcries of "I'M GONNA DO IT I SWEAR!" I see are shit. And what do you know, 12 or so hours later, all of the posts are gone and they're back to normal after a couple dozen happy asks and notes reaching 1k of support.

Re: Don't be shitty!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

I'd rather "waste time" talking someone down from it and be totally wrong the next day, then get tired of this season's suicidal attention whore and later find out they went through with it after all.

It's ultimately our fault, not the person who did it. We've such a stigma on mental illness and emotional distress that we tell people to "get over it" rather than acknowledge that they might need help. This only pushes them further into feeling alone and isolated. And then when they attempt or succeed at suicide, we whine that they took the "coward's way out." This, by the way, is a good sign of an insensitive moron.

And of course some people take that even further by saying someone who committed suicide is "going to hell," which shows an almost sociopathic disregard for peoples' suffering, both that of the victim and their loved ones, which doesn't really seem very Christian, does it?

I unfriended a lot of people on Facebook last year when Robin Williams died, I tell you what.

It isn't just a mental health issue, it is also a crippling poverty issue. If you are facing eviction and having to live on the streets because even though you've tried everything you can there are no jobs that pay enough, then suicide is an entirely rational choice. If you are forced to live in conditions that are degrading, or are forced to act as an indentured servant, then suicide is rational. Suicide can be rational. Sometimes it is the only rational choice. Our society is rotten to its very core.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I've honestly considered suicide for poverty reasons before. I barely make enough to live day to day in a not-great apartment and with not-great things. And I obviously can't save enough for health things or retirement. So I'm dreading what will happen as I get older. Will I really be able to work at this crap job in these crap conditions until I die? Or would it be better to end it early/earlier?

IAWTC. Seriously.

I lack the energy for pseudophilosophy and doing your homework for you.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the OP. This is not theoretical for me - I have extremely severe depression. I like hearing the discussions on this community in particular. I'm sorry that I posted it since it's clearly not a thing that anyone wants to talk about.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

It's not that nobody wants to talk about it, it's that it's a heavy topic along with the fact that people bring it up all the time. Imagine if you go to your favorite fandom site and every other day someone is like "so guys how do y'all feel about abortion" and the same people say the same things and take the same sides over and over. As soon as you see the word it's like "not this again"

tl;dr It's not you, its the subject.

I don't really feel like "morality" goes into much at all. It's usually a desperate act, done by someone in extreme mental anguish. To ascribe "morality" to it, in my personal opinion, just diverts from the real issue. Which really is that, a a society, we're pretty crap in handling mental illness and trauma.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO

It IS selfish and greedy in a lot of cases. If you have people depending on you or people who love you, then killing yourself is absolutely selfish. You're ruining multiple people's lives because you can't stand your own. That doesn't make you a terrible person, but it does mean that the act itself is selfish and greedy -- you're ending your pain but transferring it to others.

I also think it's terrible the way people try to pretend that it isn't selfish. Basically the entire reason I never killed myself was because I knew how much it would devastate my family.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think it's way more selfish for people to expect you to live just for their sake. Especially if you've noticed something's wrong and have done jack shit to help them out. Or your way of helping is to fucking guilt trip them into staying alive.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not nice of them but at the end of the day, no one can swoop in and save you. They can help but suicidal people who expect that others can save them are setting themselves up for failure.

Greedy? I've heard arguments for selfish, and while I don't really agree with them I at least understand the logic. But how is suicide greedy? What's it greedy for?

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-07-02 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's complicated.

I feel that people have a right to die on their own terms, with dignity, in a manner of their choosing. In that light I am not against the concept of suicide. I very much support a person's right to die.

On the other hand, usually when people talk about suicide they want to die for reasons that are temporary at best, and in a manner that may put others at risk. This, I don't agree with, nor do I agree with the concept of a romantic suicide. Death is never romantic.

At the end of the day I wish euthanasia laws would hurry the fuck up, and I somewhat like the idea of the Futurama suicide booths. Only... more humanely executed. No pun intended.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
It is selfish and greedy and if they want to do it, then they should go ahead and do it and get their useless asses out of the way.

Isn't it past your bedtime?
