Same, if I like the dynamic between two characters and see them in a romantic light then I'll end up shipping them no matter what the fanbase is like. If I don't like the fandom then I'll just avoid it. (I've done it before, and will undoubtedly do so again.)

On the other hand, shippers don't typically turn me off to fandoms; if I want to try something I will, and again, if the fanbase is one I'm not fond of then I'll just enjoy the media by myself.

Maybe it's because I've been in some of the larger, more 'obnoxious' fandoms and tend to know what to expect. (Probably doesn't hurt that I tend to jump from fandom to fandom anyway, so if one doesn't work for me there's usually something else to try.)
