Why feel ashamed of it? If it's a brilliant and touching story, then it's a brilliant and touching story. Art is art, even if you don't like the creator.

If you want to boycott the creator, that's fine, but that's a different issue. If you're going to read it, then divorce yourself from the creator, and just appreciate the text for itself.
