I've...read worse?

I kinda want to know if this was supposed to be serious or not because it did not feel that way. I found it definitely creepy but also entertaining in a cracky way?

...a fan-favorite character is retconned as having caused a REAL LIFE epidemic that killed, and continues to kill, millions of real people. Specifically by saying that he was faking an identity, an identity that actually belonged to a real person who actually lived and died of this disease. And the lovable rogue seems to think this is a hilarious peccadillo of his, a naughty escapade he'll not admit to.

I am, with all due respect, genuinely curious about what you've read that's worse.

Have you ever read Fan Fiction Friday features on Topless Robot? Some of the most horrifying fanfic I've ever read was featured there.
