Cooking Shows?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on, don't leave me hanging. Who likes cooking shows? Baking shows? Which ones do you watch? Why do you like watching him?

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant *them, not him.

I unabashedly LOVE Chopped.

I love it too. Something about their faces when they open those stupid fucking baskets speaks to me. I also like seeing their techniques, it gives me ideas for my own cooking.

I love watching Chopped and Iron Chef. And anything Alton Brown is on.

Alton is great on Cutthroat Kitchen. I love it when he walks in and starts making snide comments as the chefs are cooking.

*sighs* I wish he was on this season of Food Network Star.

I like when Alton talks about history and science but his jokes are NOT FUNNY. I had an annoying teacher like him.

The ones I like are:

1) Chopped - it's just so simple and stripped-down in terms of the format, when they're not doing some dumb gimmick week. It really puts the emphasis on the cooking, and the cooking really goes to some fascinating places because of the constraints they put on it. I feel like it also helps me think about food better through seeing how people's minds work, in terms of combining flavors and techniques and stuff.

Also, I love that the judges, and mostly the contestants, very obviously really, really give a shit about food and just want to see people make good stuff. Like, I love when the judges get caught up in whether someone's going to plate or not. It's so good.

2) America's Test Kitchen - I'll sometimes watch other recipe shows (Jacques Pepin is OK) but this is the main one that I like, because it's so thorough. It really goes through the underlying logic of why you're doing everything - not the science (like Alton Brown does, who I don't really watch), but the logic in cooking terms, about how each step effects the finished dish. It's also very easy to follow, and generally trustworthy in terms of results. The show is also just really cheerful and upbeat, and I really like all the cooks, and Christopher Kimball is adorable. It's good.

3) Anthony Bourdain shows (whichever one you happen to be talking about) - I just love Anthony Bourdain, mostly. I really trust his taste and judgment, and I mostly believe that he's not going to flimflam me and talk up something that sucks the way a lot of travel shows will - I'm getting something reasonably close to his actual reaction. So it's a good delivery system for food porn, especially since his shows tend to be really well-made, and have an agreeable ethos and good guests, and he's an entertaining, funny guy for the most part.

That's really it, honestly. Most other cooking and food shows are just too corny. At least the ones that I've seen.

Oh my loooord.

In the past I have watched: Giada DeLaurentis' dumb Italian food shows, David Rocco's Dolce Vita, Chopped, Unwrapped, America's Test Kitchen, French Food At Home, Two Fat Ladies, Good Eats, Come Dine With Me (UK version), Diners Drive Ins and Dives, Iron Chef, Iron Chef America, The Frugal Gourmet, A Cook's Tour, Throwdown With Bobby Flay (only to see that fucker lose), Chuck's Day Off, Food 911, Forever Summer (and anything Nigella Lawson has ever done), Tyler's Ultimate, The Naked Chef, Barefoot Contessa, 30 Minute Meals, Wok With Yan/Yan Can Cook...

That's not even counting my youtube food channel subscriptions.

I LOVE the food network! I get recipe ideas from them, sometimes. Especially Diner, Drive-Ins, and Dives. They go fast when they're talking about recipes, but I have my notebook right there, and jot everything down real quick. It's a good jumping off point, if not perfect.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives would be a really cool idea if it had a different host. Don't know, sorry, but can't stand Fieri.

Also, I feel like it probably has a negative effect on the quality of the places it covers? IDK though

Fieri and Blobby Flay are the worst things to happen to the Food Network.

Americas Test Kitchen, because their techniques and recipes are good basics, but I always have to cut the amount of salt in them, and add spices as they tend to be overly salty and bland. I love Jacques Pepin (his recipes are sooo simple and his techniques are en pointe). Also loving Healthful Indian Flavors With Alamelu, as I love Indian cuisine but know nothing as far as how to prepare it.

I quite enjoy Master Chef and Cake Boss. Master Chef, just to see what the contestants come up with and Cake Boss for the completely outrageous cakes they make, also they do some really pretty wedding cakes.

I watch more cooking shows than anything else. It's always on Cooking Channel or Create at my house.

I used to like watching "Two Hot Tamales" (with Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Miliken)on The Food Network and "Ready, Set, Cook! with Sissy Biggers". I also like Curtis Aikens.

In the Kitchen with David on QVC. I never feel like I had to go to culinary school watching it.
