SPN fandom was worse, anon. So much worse. (But I have heard many mentions over the years about how terrible Merlin's RPF problem was. Never experienced it myself, but it was certainly one of the few fandoms I was in where RPF even seemed to be a thing.)

They all look so pretty here though! (Katie's cheekbones...damn. And Angel's hair is fabulous.)

Yesh, I've been in both, and I think SPN's was worse (and louder and bigger and scarier).

But tbh I'm not that surprised they didn't stay in touch. Bradley and Collin don't seem to be the type that run in the same social circle (and I'm not talking about stereotypical 'Bradley is jockish, Collin is swottish' tropes that a part of fandom seemed to have attached to them, but it's just a feeling I get.

I never followed either of them that closely (the most I did was watch some of the video diaries on set, which were cute; everyone looked like they were having a good time) but it isn't unusual for costars to fall out of touch. I imagine as an actor it might be difficult to stay in touch with all your old castmates (while working, and maybe hanging out with new ones), and even if you enjoyed working with them that doesn't necessarily mean the friendship will be a life long one.

So it's a bit sad, but not surprising.

I noticed this too, and I'm surprised that fandom didn't see it coming (well, not that/i> surprised as fandom runs on denial). Even as early as season three when all the Knights showed up, you could tell that Bradley had more in common/was spending more time with them.

I also think that their post-Merlin careers speak volumes: Colin stayed in Britain doing quirky/Indie stuff, and Bradley went to America for a guest-role on the CW.

Honestly, if I were to guess any two cast members that would have stayed in touch, it would be Katie/Angel, who always seemed very close and protective of each other.

I was JUST thinking about them lately. That's a shame that they don't appear to really be in touch anymore; those video diaries were hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Do they really not hang out anymore? I never shipped any of the actors but, ngl, the idea of Bradley and Colin not being friends is bumming me out

i remember seeing a secret a while back lamenting how they didn't seem to be friends anymore, how they drifted apart, and ngl i'm not in the fandom but it still made me sad.

Tinhatters like to go on about the "PR machine" and such in terms of keeping their faves from coming out and admitting they're dating or something along that lines, but the truth is almost exactly the opposite: appealing friendships are heavily "encouraged", and made very public, for the purpose of drawing more attention to the show.

You'll notice the pattern in tons of popular shows, where cast members will seem like the absolute best friends of all time, but the second the show ends, they basically vanish from each other's lives entirely since there's no reason to keep up appearances anymore. Glee is another good example of this, and another good example of tinhatters getting it totally backwards (i.e. Crisscolfer or Achele, assumed to be ~secretly in love~ as opposed to forced into a audience-friendly "friendship").

I've mentioned this only once before on these boards, but about a year after the show ended I went to a dinner party which included someone who worked on the show's crew. According to him the cast all got along fine, but they (specifically Bradley and Colin) were no where NEAR as close as the fandom liked to believe they were. A lot of their buddy-buddy interaction at the beginning of the show was organized by the promotional team; once the show became a hit they could dial it down a notch.

And this is just me, but I suspect the two of them got a bit self-conscious about how in-your-face the fandom could be about the slash/RPS. Bradley in particular got a lot of leading questions at cons and weird passive-aggressive threats on his Twitter, and it just seemed too much of a coincidence that in the last two seasons of the show there was barely ANY Bradley/Colin publicity (no DVD commentaries, no interviews together).

But the wank, anon, the wank on all sides was so beautiful.

That fandom was so fun but wow, was there wank and drama and OTT tinhatting.

I once read a post from someone who insisted that as soon as the show was finished and Guinevere (yes, the fictional character) was "out of the way", Bradley and Colin would make their relationship public.

So every now and then I allow myself a little cackle that Bradley almost immediately took off for America (and his girlfriend) and that the two of them have spent the last three years on different continents.

RPF just seems to always have that contingent of fans.

The ones that are obnoxiously inappropriate, like scary, what-is-wrong-with-you? intrusiveness.

I don't have a problem with RPF as long as it's kept firmly in the realms of imagination, but those types of fans have serious boundary issues.

Not that fanfic doesn't also sometimes attract that type - it's just harder to stalk and harass fictional characters.

i watched exactly 9 episodes of merlin before deciding neither the show nor the fandom were my shot of whiskey, but i remember seeing something on my dashboard recently about the morgana and merlin actors allegedly attending a play together. apparently another of their merlin castmates was starring. so hey, maybe at least two/three of those peeps still stay somewhat in touch!
