I don't think there really needs to be a half-life 3, it's just this game that is thought of as being so legendary that no others will ever be as good. They'll probably never be able to make a 3rd game that'll live up to everyone's expectations.

Sounds about right. It's hard to follow up a response like that, but the thing is...you can never make an entire fanbase happy anyway.

Which isn't a reason to never try (having not played Half-Life either I don't know if Half-Life 3 is something that needs making; maybe the game left off at a great place), but I can't say I don't understand it.

True. Although I guess you could say that it would probably make a lot of money off of pre-orders alone.

Lol, they would no doubt break records!

Hahahaha nope. It wasn't even a traditional cliffhanger, more like finishing a chapter 3/4 of the way through a book and you find that actually someone ripped the book in half and where's the next chapter???

Ooo, right, they had planned on releasing another 'episode' and never did, right? If it had ended in a way that was satisfying then okay (still sucks, but at least you would have closure), but that's...rather unfortunate.

What they'll probably end up making is More Half-Life, which is exactly what HL2 happened to be. And I don't have a problem with that, but I don't actually care whether they release it or not.

As to whether it needs making... well, HL2 Episode 2 ended on a cliffhanger that is now 8 years old.

They might, yea. I know Portal is set in the Half-Life verse, so maybe they'll keep expanding but not going back to their old story or cast.

8 years is a long, long time for a video game to stay unfinished. The only one I can think of that went longer is Shenmue.

Duke Nukem Forever.

Right, that one didn't cross my mind. 15 years is insane.

TBH after about eight years I gave up hope on Shenmue (which isn't to say I didn't still want it, but I figured it would never get made), but now it has a Kickstarter, so... maybe Half-Life 3 can happen one day.

I disagree. The Half-Life franchise left off on a cliffhanger that ought to be resolved, and the existence of unpleaseable fucks is not a reason not to make a game. And Valve is GOOD at what they do. They make good games, when they make games.
