I rather suspect it might have been canon in a different cultural climate. I read about this recently and I think Sesame Street issued a WOG statement that they are just best friends and roommates, but I can easily see how one would interpret them as being partners.

Maybe I am showing my age here, but I always thought of them as Sesame Street's version of The Odd Couple. Bert is/was Felix (neat and uptight) and Ernie is/was Oscar (messy and relaxed and one to go with the flow.)

And while maybe if they debuted today they would be a couple I tend to think that if/when Sesame Street tackles same sex couples it will more through the a new younger muppet who has two moms or two dads. Or at least that is how I hope they do given the target viewership is preschool kids. It would nice from them to have a family on the show that reflects their home life in at least some ways.

Oh, I don't think they'll retcon Ernie and Bert, nor do I necessarily think they should. It's kinda cute to see them that way now, though. Nothing wrong with an alternate interpretation of canon after all :)

I agree with both of these thoughts.
