You're not wrong, OP. As often as I've felt fandom pushed (trampled) the boundaries of good taste, it was a lot more fun and exciting place to be during its 'edgy' phase than the minefield it's become.

+1. As a fandom old-timer, it is interesting to see just how far the pendulum has swung. I wish I had a time machine for all those people who said "sure it would be bad if people took things that far, but fandom would NEVER do that." And yet, here we are.

Agreed. Especially since, as far as I recall, pretty much everyone was aware that their edgy stuff was a) not condoning any of the stuff IRL that tends to send the SJWs up in flames these days, and b) was just for fun. Seriously weird and messed up fun, sometimes, but just fun.

+1

I tried to explain this to a newish fandom friend, but she didn't believe me fandom has really changed.

This! I remember very clearly the 'dark' communities for fic that grew up like mushrooms, people going all over the place with kinks, fetishes, whatever. And everybody got that it was just writing, and nobody thought for one second anyone actually *wanted* any of that stuff to happen.

People just do not *get* it, anymore.
