Sadly this kind of fandom-policing shit was around before tumblr, it was just much harder to run into because Lj and other messaging board sites didn't lend themselves as easily as tumblr does to the spreading of information(or mis-information).
It does seem to have take off by storm in the last year or so, or at least it feels like it to me because I've seen more 'HDU LIKE THIS THING' posts in the last year than I did before, or hell maybe it was always there and it just hadn't hit my fandoms yet.
