I've read similar stories where people stop believing in the Labyrinth so it begins to fall apart, Jareth loses his power, and Sarah has to come return belief and save it.

I almost want them to go in a totally different direction because I don't think anyone could really capture the charm from the Jim H. company. Even Weta went way too CGI in the new Hobbit films. If they went back to practical effects, I think there's a chance but I no longer count on it. But if they went WAY different then I don't think it would feel like they were stepping on the original as much. I think I might like a darker, more mature take on it, but with the happy ending at the end.

I like your idea of the infection. It would be a good way of bringing Sarah back.
