After the ludicrous allegations about John Green, I'm skeptical about damn near every rumor. The boy who cried wolf and all of that...

what alligations?

Eh...somebody on another forum made a post accusing JG of being a pedo. Their 'evidence' for this came from....wait for it...wait....tumblr.

Specifically, a tumblr post made by somebody who, if I were in the armchair psychology industry, seemed like a classic case of nutso. Unfortunately, it made the rounds, the YA industry closed ranks, he defended himself on twitter, then got shit stormed for defending himself, people HAD OPINIONS ABOUT THIS MADNESS U GUIZ, and last I heard he left the internet. It was the sort of thing Fandom Wank would've had a field day with back in the day.

Do we know it's untrue? Tumblr is not just made of lies, so I would need to see the proof before giving him a pass.

You need someone to prove they're NOT a pedophile? It doesn't normally work that way. The burden of proof is on the one making the claim. I saw no such proof provided, and everybody involved seemed to be batshit crazy.

The "proof" was the fact that he writes books for teenage girls. And writing books for a certain demographic means you want to fuck them, didn't you know?

It wasn't even an allegation. It was "this man writes YA, so I think he's a creeper, because why else would a man write YA with romance except to fuck little girls??? Obviously he's hung up on some girl he never got to fuck!" That and say he's evil because of things his book characters say. The sad thing is he's actually really active in social justice, works on education and works a lot for charity.

And they'll defend their actor crushes who are accused of abuse, or whatever horrible thing they're saying, but somehow John Green is now awful despite...not actually doing anything other than some foot in mouth moments which were instantly apologized for.

Tumblr kept on passing around stuff like that, until finally an answered ask went viral and he had to close down. He hasn't left the net, he's still pretty active on twitter. He just doesn't really interact on tumblr anymore like he used to. He closed the ask box last I heard, and generally only posts original content on his tumblr or interacts with larger blogs.

But he's on tour for Paper Towns right now, so I would've be surprised if his presence is less. He had to skip out on his podcast.

There was one accusation via yourfaveisproblematic, however I can honestly believe it was someone trolling. There are many sources that John has severe anxiety and OCD, and that he hates being touched by people he doesn't know very well. and while he may be affectionate with people he knows well, that doesn't make him so with strangers.

It's such an integral part of him that it made it into one of the Crash Course videos, and he actually made a post apologizing for how anti-social he can come across and by people being disappointed at how distant he is at cons.

Someone posted a tumblr thing that was basically "Lol, isn't it kinda creepy how John Green's an adult man who's really obsessed with teenage girls? If he was someone's dad constantly wanting to hang out with their teenage girl friends it would be creepy, but because he's an author it's ok?"

And he reblogged it with "I'M NOT A PEDOPHILE, YOU'RE A PEDOPHILE! THAT'S LIBEL AND I COULD SUE YOU!!!" And basically went full Anne Rice on this random tumblr teen, sending all his white knights to issue death threats to her and other authors to scold her and...

It's like... dude. Chill. Seriously chill. You're making it really weird now. And you're really not arguing your case that you're NOT being weird about teenage girls if a random internet one gets you so worked up.

Except that's not how he responded at all. Besides, accusations of pedophilia are really fucking serious.

Except there wasn't any pedo accusations? She said she personally kinda creepy in her own journal. Lots of things are kind of creepy.

People are acting like she went to a news outlet and went "I have proof that John Green touched me in the no-co place!" and yeah, that would be horrible. But sheesh, just a month or so ago there was a whole topic on how Piers Anthony writes way too many sexy little girls and that makes a lot of posters here think he's kind of creepy. How's that any different?

Yeah, like the gist of the original post was basically "I am an underage girl and certain things about John Green's web presence make me feel uncomfortable," and it was pretty clear from the amount of reblogs it got that a lot of other young girls agreed with her. And the response from John Green and other YA authors was pretty awful because it prioritized John Green getting his feelings hurt over the comfort of his underage fanbase. If he isn't willing to listen to kids about things like this, then he really shouldn't be writing for them.

The only thing that came close to being any form of evidence was a user who recounted a story about a female fan who met him at a con and told him about a traumatic experience she had, he hugged her to console her (which I actually could see as a minor issue because I personally know people who have issues being touched without permission) but whoever ended up replying to the ask that contained this 'evidence' literally extrapolated it to him having a history of sexual assaulting young women, which is fucking ridiculous and he called them out on it until they removed it.

And this was a long while back when yourfaveisproblematic was still active. It also came up again pretty recently, but fortunately a majority of tumblr users (fans of Green and non-fans alike) call out people who are making unfounded allegations, a lot of times bringing up the fact that insinuating he's a pedophile when there is literally no evidence just because you don't like him is extremely disrespectful towards actual victims of abuse.

I don't even like John Green, but making awful accusations like that is just sickening. I really don't think these kids know what they're doing and how they're damaging people's lives when they say this stuff.

Emphasis on kids. This is why I avoid the Tumblr hive.
