at the risk of sounding wicked condescending, i think a lot of people who find shakespeare a chore suffered from bad teachers/first exposures. if you can see shakespeare performed with all the intended liveliness, and if you have a teacher willing to acknowledge that to modern americans shakespeare is basically writing in a different dialect if not language, you can come away, usually, with an appreciation--if not ardent love--for a lot of what he did

I'll read them if I get one of the copies with modern English on one side. Otherwise, I get no enjoyment out of reading something and then having to spend 10 minutes trying to suss out the meaning.

I also dislike reading most poetry for the same reason. And I had a great teacher (who was very challenging). When he heard I disliked poetry, we spent a every morning for a whole semester dissecting a poem. -__-

Agreed. I was completely bored by it in middle school. Made worse by the fact that the teacher insisted on making us read Midsummer Night's Dream, which is, uh, not relevant to the interests of a pre-teen boy.

I didn't really develop an appreciation for Shakespeare until college.

How interesting. I would have honestly thought that of all Shakespeare's plays, A Midsummer Night's Dream would have the most appeal for a pre-teen boy. It's probably better to see it actually staged than try to read it at that age, though.
