Re: "Classics" that you hate?

Yes to Wuthering Heights so much. For my AP English class, the summer before we had to read that and War and Peace. Everyone else was bemoaning War and Peace. I loved that. Wuthering Heights, on the other hand, was horrible. I don't get the love. Everyone in it is loathsome, the plot is horrible, and there is not a single redeeming feature. It isn't just that I hate it, I don't even get why it is a classic.

I like the 'Hark! a vagrant' version.

It might have something to do with the movie version starring Laurence Olivier for some people. The filmmakers did an excellent job of making the plot seem broodily romantic, while also leaving out some of the ickier elements.

So maybe the mood/style of writing does the same thing for some people?

Maybe? I haven't seen it. I just can't imagine, having read the book, how anyone can come out of that liking Heathcliff or thinking he's a great option for a romantic partner. I hated the book, but at least the book was clear that he was a horrible person.

(op of this thread) When I had to read it at least my professor was very clear in her reading that Heathcliff was a deconstruction of a romantic hero, not a straight example of one, and I appreciated that reading. It didn't make me hate the whole book less though.

That's good at least. But yes, I still hate it. For me, I need to have at least one character I like. And everyone was either horrible or boring. And the story wasn't even very interesting.
