I've been meaning to read more Finnish literature. And that one's a classic. We don't have that many. (I've read Kalevala and The Seven Brothers, and that's it for Finnish classics and me).

Besides I've been on an Egypt kick lately, so decided to kill two birds with one stone on that one.

I am not at all surprised to hear it's depressing. :P But I'm glad to hear you thought it enjoyable.
