Re: Characters the fandom hates that you love?

See, to me I think siding with a friend when they are in the wrong is not the right thing to do, even if it is the natural thing to do. I like Cho because I think she's interesting. But being pissed on behalf of a friend who did what her friend did actually I think was wrong.

I disagree with this. I mean, obviously, if a friend is persisting in some great moral wrong, that's one thing, but if a friend gets into some beef, you gotta have their back. That's loyalty.

Hmmm. I guess to me, at least when it comes to the big things, right and wrong is more important than loyalty. For little things, sure. But what Marietta did was not a little thing. She betrayed everyone and very easily could have caused them to be at the very least tortured. That's a big deal, and to me that trumps loyalty.

Marietta's mom was working for the Ministry of Magic. What was Marietta supposed to do? Not to mention she was just a kid being threatened by an adult in a position of high power. Even if Marietta hadn't given up the information willingly, Dolores was demented enough that I believe she'd have used black magic on the poor girl. (Being in Ravenclaw, Marietta probably figured this as well.)
The one at blame here isn't Marietta but Dolores.

Of course Cho had her back -- Marietta was her friend and what happened wasn't her fault. (And why should Cho choose the others instead of her friend? She wasn't close to any single one of them, besides Harry, and their relationship wasn't that deep.)

Okay, I don't agree with your interpretation of what happened, but I can see it.

That last sentence, though. I guess I just don't get it? If I had a friend who did something horrible to someone else, there is no way I'd stand up for them against the other person they hurt. If what Marietta did wasn't wrong, fine. But if it was, then to me it isn't a question of friendship. So I don't see why Cho's closeness to the others or to Marietta is even an issue here.

But you can see where she was coming from. I agree that she was wrong, and I would say she should have been remonstrated with, but you can do that in private - and you have to have their back in public, or you're not a friend at all. And I don't think it was worth severing the friendship over.

Hmmm. Okay, going to have to agree to disagree on that because I don't think you have to have your friends back if it is something extreme like this. Minor, yes. But again I don't think loyalty is the most important thing. Like, if I have a friend that commits a serious crime and someone who was hurt by that crime calls them out in public, I'm not going to stand up for that friend when they clearly hurt that other person.

Okay, so suppose you have this one friend who's been with you through thick and thin while everyone else abandoned you during a personal crisis.
One day, you join an unlawful group of misfits because your intentions are good. The group isn't exactly okay in the eyes of the law.
Then you rope in your only friend, who very much does not want to be a part of any illegal activity, and the only reason they're going along with it is because they're your friend.
Said friend is getting nothing out of being in the group. In fact, her life seems to be headed towards a disaster. After a significant amount of time, things haven't changed. Your friend starts to resent the situation they're in and seek to resolve it. So, they betray your group by alerting you to the authorities. In their eyes, they're just obeying the law.
In the end, she does get punished for putting your group in jeopardy. Your group doesn't get punished because luck (and a little bit of magic) was on your side.
You knew the risks and were ready to fully commit to the cause when you joined the group. But what about your friend?

When your friend gets shunned - and you know what it's like to be alone - do you have her back? You still believe in the good cause. You know that in a time of crisis, you'll be there for your group. But right now, your friend needs you more.

What do you do?
