Man, the Neopets filtering was a weird experience for me. Super weird. for a long time "crap" and "damn" were acceptable and frequently used words in the RP community I was a part of, and our entire guild/rp/whatever was literally about violence. Occasionally our boards would be take down but that was about it. One of the few times I got in trouble with the filtering was when

1. I used the word "suicide" during an RP.
2. I didn't understand what those chain post "POST THIS COMMENT 100000 TIMES AND THE FAIRY QUEEN WILL GIVE YOU A PAINTBRUSH" things were, and I noticed there was a glaring typo in it, so I fixed it before posting and I was immediately suspended, lmao. Ah, innocent childhood.

But I forreal did some of the most dramatic rp on neopets, mostly over Neomail, for years, complete with the occasional fade-to-black scene for sex and they didn't seriously start cracking down on us until, idk, 2009?

I moved on to RP on LJ shortly after, and it makes me sad because some of the serious cracking down they did pretty much killed the RP community on Neopets. (Last I heard, some of the very popular roleplays pretty much became taboo because they'd get taken down quickly). I'd sometimes get nostalgic and take a visit, but it was mostly dead and absolutely impossible to find someone to RP with offsite, which was relatively easy when I used the website all day every day. In fact, my oldest, closest online friends are people I met on Neopets and we moved on to chatting over YIM. I got my account frozen the last time I attempted to give my IM to someone over Neopets and gave up on the site after that. At least Gaia is still more of an option, minus the hideous game-breaking inflation problems going on...

(Bonus slightly off topic story: Some parents will never ever ever be happy with how "child friendly" a website is and will flip out no matter what. I was sleeping over at a friend's house who had ridiculously overprotective parents, and I was showing them my Neopets. When their parents found out, because someone randomly sent me a petpet gift and their parents realized, GASP!, you could talk to REAL LIVE PEOPLE on a WEBSITE FOR KIDS my friend got in trouble. Which was incredibly ridiculous to me, especially as I was a straight lace, never lied about my age, and actually got parental permission faxed into Neopets to access the boards like a goody-two-shoes when I was under 13, how old you had to be to chat without parent permission. Parents like that are the reason Neopets is crap now.)
