That moment when...

(Anonymous) 2015-07-09 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
...you bite into a firm, delicious looking apple...

...and get a mouthful of unsweet, crumbly mush that's surely in the middle stage of decomposition. D:

Oh gross.
All of the supermarket ones I've had lately have been juiceless and depressing.

I know the feeling. Sometimes the apple display is where I spend the most time during a grocery run. You'd think spending all that time checking for dents, bruises, cuts and firmness would count for something. :P

An alternate crappy ending is when the apple is wonderfully firm and juicy...until you find the core is bruised and brown so you only get to eat up to 1/2 of the apple.

Sad times.
I'm still going to eat them in the hope of biting into a perfect one.

I think farmer's markets might have some better stuff than the supermarkets. They're all so pretty and identical but clearly nobody is taste testing them.

Ugh, that's the worst! Apples are my favorite fruit (I know, I'm boring), so I'm always especially disappointed when that happens.

Hey, nothing boring about that. There are hundreds if not thousands of apple varieties. (My favorite seems to be Red Delicious, though I sometimes cheat on it with the Ambrosia and Fuji varieties.)

nayrt

I like Ambrosia, but I recently tried Pink Lady (from New Zealand, I think?), and I quite like that one too. I did try the Honeycrisp apples, which everyone said was awesome, and it was good but I was underwhelmed probably due to the hype.

Try Jazz apples? They're cheaper than Honeycrisp by half (around here), and it's like biting into a bottle of apple juice. They're also a more manageable size. :P

Thank you, I'll keep my eyes peeled for Jazz. :)

I want to try Honeycrisp, but the price keeps turning me off. Oh well. Pink Lady is just as good.

You mean that's not what all apples are like? I've only eaten a few bites of apple in my life because that's how grossed out I was by the bites I did eat, and they felt exactly like you described.

Haha. I guess it depends. Some apples I ate from the mountains had mush, but at least they weren't so... decomposing.

I'm not sure if it's the wax that keeps the juice in and the firmness, but I've had months where I will have nothing but apples as a snack.

Oh, nos! I've been having the problem with avocados from the grocery up the block. And the other half is still under ripe! :(

Ugh. I love my avocados very soft, but hate it when the only ones available have dark spots and feel like they're going to fall apart.

Same. That's mostly what we get around here, being so far away from the climes suitable for avocado growth. It's very sad.

I get this all the time with peaches

(Anonymous) 2015-07-10 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
A mealy peach is one of the two or three things whose texture can make me gag, and it is so hard to predict which ones will be good. Peaches that look like they were plucked right out of a Cezanne still life turn out to be a mess of grainy mush when you bite into them.

OP, you may have better luck with another variety of apple. Pink Lady (aka Cripps Pink) hasn't disappointed me yet.
