IMO a Dean that was even remotely close to emotionally stable (and divorced from the whole hunting side of things) would be a great boyfriend.

It's just, you know, that's obviously a million miles away from the Dean that we actually see on the show.

Forget about boyfriend. Neither of them would be good boyfriend material even apart from the emotional issues and hunting. But I'd do Dean in a heartbeat. He's perfect one night stand material. Sam not so much for me personally.

can you elaborate on why they wouldn't be good boyfriends, even if it weren't for the emotional issues and hunting

like, what are the reasons besides those two (admittedly insanely massive) categories of issues

I think their personalities. Both are rather self centered. Dean's way of treating women doesn't bother me in a one night stand context with women who totally know what they are getting into. But I can't see him being a great boyfriend. And Sam is rather controlling and judging in a way that I don't think would work well for a boyfriend.

That being said, maybe they could work for some people regardless of those issues. I just don't think for me personally those things would result in a great relationship.

Fair enough then. I think your reading of Dean is a little different than mine but, hey, it's a dumb TV show anyway. (Agree on Sam though)

Separate Dean from his codependency with his brother, and he'd make a great boyfriend, I agree.

Just look at how things were between him and Lisa in season 6. No, it wasn't perfect, but he was doing okay, he was unquestionably faithful and devoted and even a good "dad" to Ben.

Things didn't fall apart until Dean discovered that Sam was alive and back from hell. :/
