I didn't get the sense that she was co-dependent, though. I mean, she doesn't need him to function. She just REALLY wants his approval. Which I understand that people don't want Samus to defer to anyone, but I don't really think it's general personality characteristic. Rather it's Samus wanting to prove herself.

Plus, I mean, even if she didn't respect Adam, she'd have to listen to him considering she's on a Federation vessel.

a co-dependent weirdo who defers to Adam not out of respect for his position but because his presence makes her a sniveling child.

Bolded for emphasis.

Right, I get that, but I wouldn't say it's co-dependent because she can easily function without him.

I don't know that I'd say she was a child, though, more that he was a figure from her past and losing the baby metroid dredged up a ton of stuff she had never really dealt with and so him being there was just an aggravating factor.

I'd agree with you more if she didn't consistently pull herself together and go and kick ass. It might take a little while, sometimes, but in the end she does what she needs to.

The problem is it shouldn't have happened at all. It was completely ham-fisted and insulting and a complete insult to the character. She might as well have said "uguu~" every other scene.

Yeah, that's right, I'm saying Other M turned her into a sniveling, whiny character out of some shitty moeblob anime.

I...didn't see it that way, to be honest.

She reminded me a lot of Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender in his desperation to win his father's love and approval. Adam's not quite as much of a dick as Ozai though.

Honestly, her relationship with the Adam AI in Metroid Fusion was much, much better handled. Other M wouldn't have been so terrible if it was more like that, with lots of resentment and outright rebellion on Samus' part, because that would actually be in line with her character.

I can understand the resentment and rebellion in Fusion but I thought Other M really was about her being in a vulnerable spot. You see the same thing with Zuko in A:TLA, once he realizes what an asshole his father is being, he rebels and calls him. And clearly deeply resents the man as well.

Before that though, he's very much focused on how to appear perfect to his father.

Yeah, but Samus isn't Zuko.

Re: OP

Yeah but I'm just saying that I don't mind her being portrayed this way.

I feel, given the trauma she's suffered, that she has understandable reactions.

I don't think she's ALWAYS this way - it was more of the fact that she'd lost the metroid, never dealt with a lot of shit from her past, and then suddenly had Adam and a lot of other crap from her past dredged up.

For something like Metroid Prime, I don't think she would be as emotionally vulnerable.

Good for you that you don't mind. Just be willing to accept that you are in the minority for a very good reason and while I'm not usually willing to put value judgments on someone's opinion you probably should feel bad.

you're the one who said you LOVE people getting angry about it

Re: OP

I bet OP is projecting. Judging from their replies they're in deep denial about how messed up the ship is and is pissed off people keep breaking their illusion by pointing out how the plot and their justifications doesn't make sense.

It's kinda funny to watch.

Right, but the only time Samus "rebels" against him he can't hear her and she goes right back to wanting his approval again so it pretty much amounts to nothing.

And her reward is getting shot in the back. And she still sings his praises sooo not really like Zuko at all.
