i think you're right there, it's just what you like and are into and isn't just about that obsessive drive anymore. i guess you could call them casual fans, but then i know some hardcore fans you'd take as casual fans because no usual tells, they just watch or read about it with intensity.

being in fandom is more about liking something and behing in the community - including quiet consumers and lurkers. while casual fans might float around on the fringes or not be involved in the fandom at all.
then there's those hardcore fans who might just not be all that into OL presence - anons, keep changing usernames, just not interested in the OL side of fandom.

and of course, people express their interest in different ways ;) cosplay, writing, reading, watching/reading over and over, consuming and creating

I agree with you, actually! I'm not saying you can't be a hardcore fan and not be involved in fandom. I know hardcore fans of things who aren't in fandom, but trust me, they're hardcore fans.

I may just start a thread later, I didn't explain myself well.
