Hmmm I totally get where you're coming from.

Okay so, I've been in lots of fandoms since the mid-90s, such as Sailor Moon, FF7 and Harry Potter.
I think those fandoms did a big number on me... I still love discussing about them, but I know better than to get into heated debates and so seek to avoid any conflicts. I have become a "casual fan". And you know what? I like it. I have an easier time navigating through various fandoms.
I'm just as big of a fan as before, I just don't obsess over it.

One thing I've also noticed that before I didn't really have that many stimulating conversations about stuff we were fans of with my few irl friends, and fandom was my escape for that. Things are different now. I don't feel the need to seek validation through fandoms anymore -- and I'm not implying that that's what fandoms are to people, but for me it was.

And yes, sometimes I'd rather not talk when I'm in the fandom, but I'm still happy to hear what others have to say.

I'm just happy to read good fics, and putting your fan-art on display is a lot easier when you're not a BNF.
