What reason do you have for renting a car in NY? from what I vaguely remember from going to NYC you'd be better off with the subway, buses, or taxis because traffic is AWFUL. Even a rent-a-bike might get you wherever faster. Of course, if you want to go see something outside of the city it's a different story.

It might be a better idea to fly to NY, take the Megabus or Chinatown Bus to DC, and rent a car there if you need a car. Then you can either fly out of Dulles or take the bus back to NYC for your flight.

Oh no, we'd only rent a car for like 5 hours to drive from NYC to DC.

Unless the car rental is less than $30, you will save money going with the Chinatown Bus. I have actually personally rode the southern half of this route (PHL to DC) and it was perfectly fine--bus was clean, it left on time, and it even had free wifi. Lets you out right outside a metro station in Chinatown. Tons of departure times too, check it out.

Megabus seems to be running the same price, maybe a little more expensive.

I'll give Chinatown Bus a look as well! It does seem quite cheap.
