okay so, say you want to download Super Cool: The Movie

go to the website you're getting them from, and in the search box, type in the keywords for what you're trying to download (for this example, you'd be putting in super cool). if you get a lot of results that aren't what you're looking for, narrow the search by category to what you are looking for (for the example's purpose, you're looking for a movie, so if that's a category, use that, but it may be a broader thing like "videos")

find one that has a lot of seeders if possible (there'll be a column labeled seeds or something similar), because the more seeders there are, the faster your download is likely to go since there's more people to download the file from. once you do that, look for a link that says "download torrent file" or "download as magnet link", and click one of them. the first option will download a file to your computer, which you then open in the client, while the second will do some computer magic and open automatically in the client, so there's no file to take up space other than the one you're downloading. I personally prefer magnet links, but you can do whichever you like, it doesn't matter in the end.

once it's open in the client, you just wait for it to do its thing, and it'll notify you when it's done downloading. it's considered in good taste to let the file seed for a while when you're finished downloading so other people can download it too, especially if it's a popular thing, but it's not a requirement if you feel like being an asshole.

as for staying secure, there really isn't much you can do on that front. stay away from seedy looking websites, install an adblocker for your browser of choice, keep your virus definitions up to date and actually listen to it if it says something's infected.

it's also always wise to check the comments, if there are any, to check how legit/good quality the torrent is
