Ao3 is the better site for writers, and hard core fans, but FF.net is the better site for readers and fans who are more prone to browsing. Plus Ao3 is the smut site too.

I would say it's the other way around.

AO3 is by far the better site for readers because you can download fic. Ff for writers because apparently you get more reviews there.

But on ao3, you cannot find the fic you want. Its search engine is optimized to return the maximum amounts of results, meaning you get a morass of badly tagged and overtagged crap to wade through. It has the better uploading system, and the best chance of your fic turning up in the churn. So it is better for writers, and it encourages smut.

FF.net is better for readers because its search results are now able to return a much more target profile of hits, making it far more likely to actually find what you are looking for and not be overloaded with poorly written smut or page after page of a single person's drabbles. Its upload system is clunky, though, but for readers you can actually get what you want to read. For writers it has a clunky upload, and you can't rely on the tag spam throwing your fic up if the searcher has tried to exclude it.

Only if people actually tag with the pairing, etc. which most don't in my main fandom because everyone ought to love the juggernaut pairing, right?

I'm a writer and while the format isn't as nice, I like FFnet better because I reach more people and get a lot more feedback. As a reader, I want to like AO3 but I can never seem to navigate their search system to find the fics I want. /shrug

On the contrary I think AO3 is better for readers and ff.net better for writers.

I'm not totally enthused about AO3 for a few reasons:

1. It seems to inconsistently filter search criteria depending on how exactly you run your search.
2. You can only search the "top ten" pairings in a given fandom to further narrow your search.
3. Author profiles do not look consistent either. Sometimes you'll get only a partial list of their fics + their "bookmarks" (which TBH isn't as useful IMO as the favorite fics list in ff.n), upon which you need to explicitly click a link on the left side to get the full list of their published fics.

Well, with regards to the first point, that's not exactly inconsistent, it's just finicky and precise.

I agree on the second one, though (although it's technically possible to filter for other fandoms, it's really annoying to track down the tag ID, and also, I'm just curious and like to see those lists because I think it's cool).
