I read a book once called Apex Hides the Hurt that tried to make a point about casual racism against black people with an extended metaphor about stubbed toes. The main character stubs his toe once, then stubs it again, and again and again and again. He keeps trying to pretend nothing is wrong--it's just a stubbed toe, nothing major, right?--and he keeps covering it up with a flesh-tone bandage. Eventually he has to amputate his toe, and he walks funny the rest of his life.

I think it's the second-stupidest metaphor I've ever read, behind Shannon Burke's use of a burnt-out Christmas light as a metaphor for dying of AIDs.

AYRT

That metaphor is idiotic and implies the POC is too dumb to realize when the problem is becoming serious. Good job author.

I've suffered from casual racism but I hate this fucking black and white - excuse the pun - deal where you must either immediately fly into a rage or completely ignore all of it and pretend you're shiny and happy and fine until you eventually melt down in rage anyway.
