Unfortunately, you're gonna need to accept the fact that artists are a wanky lot, no matter what.
The key is to ignore them and do what you like!
There are lots of places to get pose references besides other art in the genre. (here's a good one! (http://www.posemaniacs.com/blog/)) As long as you're not copying someone's color scheme, style, pose, character and so on wholesale, then you're fine. There's so much more to a drawing than the pose.
