where to even post fannish stuff?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been sitting on a fic for a while and think I may clean it up and post it. I'm an "old timer" and used to just post stuff on LJ. This is for a fandom I wasn't in before and I have NO IDEA where the fandom's at. Are there still active LJ comms? Do I just post on AO3, try to tag it well, and hope for the best?

AO3 is a good bet. Just tag stuff with anything included in your fics. In my experience even within a fandom some characters or ships will get more hits than others. And you'll get way more kudos than reviews. but even kudos feel really nice.

Most authors I know multi-post. They'll post on either livejournal or tumblr and then post on at least AO3 and sometimes fanfiction.net too.

NAYRT, but can you tag too much on Ao3? I've been lagging in kudos/hits there and I wonder if that's not my problem, I'm using too few tags.

Mostly I think when you are tumblr style tagging, that's when it gets to be too much. I think maybe if a character only shows up for one scene you don't need to tag them. But otherwise I air on the side of as much as possible. I tend to write porny stuff, and I'll tag the characters, the pairings, and any of the kinks involved. That way it is more likely to get readers.

AYRT (this time, heh) - Ah, okay. Yeah, I haven't posted to an archive in so long I'm still trying to learn the ropes, as it were. Sort of wish they had beta readers or something there.

Sometimes, if the fandom I'm writing in has an active kink/prompting meme, I post a very general version of the idea there and then I post my fic. It's very manipulative I guess but...I just want people to read my stuff.

I ~sort of do this too. I post all my kinky fic ideas to my fandom's kink meme, and that way if someone decides to write it, then I get to read it, and if no one does, then I can come along later and fill my own prompt if I have time, and it's more likely to get read.

Also, it's a kink meme fill so I can point to that and be all, "Hey, I'M not supremely fucked up, it was THE PROMPT!" :P

I would just post it on AO3, you could also check the archive for that fandom on AO3 and see if its active? And you can always look for still active LJ comms? I assume here are still some out there, but I can't say WHERE exactly the fandom is without knowing the fandom.

Ao3 is your best bet, in general - but if you didn't mind listing the fandom, somebody here might know where those folks tend to hang out most!

You can still try to find an active LJ comm if you want. I think there are a few, depending on the fandom.

Why not multi-post? You can post to LJ, AO3 and even fanfiction.net if you want. I don't think it's that big a deal. (Plus tumblr, but I don't like reading fanfic on tumblr, personally. Some people probably do though, so you might still find an audience. If nothing else, you can link to AO3, LJ, etc from there.)

What they said - spread the fic around!

Multiposting is always good! AO3, ff.net, LJ/DW comms for your fandom...In my experience, just posting on AO3 is sufficient, but promoting on Tumblr's a good idea too. Just use the fandom and character tags, and try and find the ship name if applicable, and that should be good enough :)
