Idk where you're getting this idea that SH purists defend 4 in the least...

Since suffering through the more recent iterations of SH (Homecoming, Downpour, Shattered Memories, etc.), though, I've gone back and found myself a bit more lenient with 4 than I was as an "original 3" purist. It's far and away not perfect, but it's leagues better than the bullshit that it's become lately. At least it has a moderately creepy atmosphere, and it had a few things that actually got under my skin (the water prison on the whole, some of the hauntings in your room).

Yeah, I was gonna say that SH4 retroactively benefits from the really shitty games that followed it. There's a lot of SH4 that is forgettable and its connection to the SH canon is tenuous at best--but the slow degradation of the apartment feels much more like 'classic' Silent Hill than anything involved with Homecoming or Downpour.
