What is the target demographic for Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I was having an argument with my Dad, who says that since Buffy is attractive and always wearing sexy outfits, it means that the show is meant for men. Specifically, he said, adult men, since Buffy is an "adult show".

Am I wrong that this show is mainly for teenage girls? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here or something.

I'd say 19-24 year olds regardless of sex.

People who were in their early 20s in the late 1990s. Mainly young guys though.

The fact that he thinks a show where the main character is underage for the first couple of seasons is an "adult show" for men where she "is attractive and wears "sexy outfits" is kind of creepy.

I'd say that it was for teenagers in the beginning, regardless of gender, who then aged up with the show.

Meh. SMG was 20 when BTVS started.

Well, sure, but the character was supposed to be 15.

That's ridiculous. It's a show for teenagers 15-19.

She... She's wearing everyday clothes. They're not sexy outfits...they're literally what people wear in everyday life...

Well he said, specifically, "You think girls want to watch Buffy dance around in her tiny cheerleader outfit?"

He's like 70. A little creepy. Oh well.

Yes? Especially little girls who are into cheerleading? Not everything is viewed through sexual lenses? She doesn't even wear that outfit very often?

She...She wore that outfit once.

I wouldn't say "everyday clothes"

some weird-ass 90s fashion on that show

The first season, her clothing is atrocious. I seem to recall it's nowhere near as awful in subsequent years, but yes, I do cringe every time I see Buffy in any of her season 1 outfits.

Yeah, I'd say late teens to early twenties! Though I'm mostly saying that out of personal preference, since I didn't care about the show when it came out, but ended up getting really into it when I caught a couple re-runs at 18-19 years old, haha.

Jesus weeping fuck, do neither of you understand that a show can be designed so as to appeal to multiple demographics? That's standard practice, and all the more so back in the 90s, when narrowcasting was not a thing.

I know that they do! He was just saying that I shouldn't want to go to an amusement park because "they're for children", and I was arguing that he watches things meant for teenagers. Just because there's a target doesn't mean that everyone who likes it has to fit that target.

that;s somehow even dumber than i had originally thought (on his part, i mean)

Amusement parks have rides with height requirements that usually rule out young kids. It'd be silly to argue that rollercoasters aren't meant for adults when they're clearly designed for adults in mind. But honestly, I wouldn't take any argument seriously from an adult creeper who feels the need to point out how sexy a high school character is.

Are you the same anon about a week ago who mentioned that their dad likes Buffy (the character) waaaaaay too much to the point where it made you too uncomfortable to watch the show? If so, I think your dad has some issues (I mean, yeah, Buffy is hot but it's kind of creepy if you think that her attractiveness that the show was made exclusively for men to wank over). Like, get a grip dad

I think your dad is a bit creepy.

I'd say it's meant for a teen-20something demographic. It's not that your Dad is wrong about the sexy outfits (though if you want to make him squirm, remind him she's supposed to be in high school, geez) it's just that dressing female characters for sexual appeal tends to be the norm no matter what the demographic is.

I was around 10 years old when the show started, but I remember it was hugely popular among 14-17 year olds. Well, all the cool kids watched either X-files, South Park or Buffy. (I watched all 3 because my parents let me stay up late. I was regarded as the coolest kid on the block by my peers.)
I mean, teenagers didn't have much to choose from. The other options were basically Melrose Place and Dawson's Creek.

I don't think the show appeals to older people? Sometimes my dad watched Buffy with me, but he was never creepy about it and acknowledged it was a show for kids.

Also, I always got the impression that Buffy was "the cute girl" (she wore a lot of preppy clothes with pastels and flower motifs iirc). Even her cheerleader outfit covered a lot. Maybe in later seasons she was more sexy than cute? I honestly just remember she wore a lot of outfits that it girls wore, the kinda stuff you see in Seventeen magazine and the like.
