I think John Winchester is debatable, the first season gave an impression he was trying to do his best but was doing a very faulty job at it. Later seasons started blackening his name, talking up how bad he was a lot more.

This. While he's not exactly father of the year, I think John is a lot more complex than Gerard and Mr. Lahey who were almost cartoonishly awful people with not a lot of grey area

But even in season one, he ignored their calls when his son was DYING. When did he actually show up? When they got a lead on the demon-killing Colt, aka, when the call related to his vengeance obsession. But Dean DYING and Sam begging for his dad to come to them and help - nah, that didn't merit so much as a returned phone call.
