But then, they still had moments of compassion, and even when they were being outright assholes never made decisions that had me wondering how they weren't dead from stupid yet. They might have been ruthless but they were still acting in positive directions in their own self interest, unlike other shows where people just kept making the worst possible decisions ever.
It really was really violent, though.
tl;dr I loved it, but I can sympathize with the OP.

How violent are we talking, exactly? Is it extreme gore or is it just realistic enough to be disturbing? My threshold for extreme violence weirdly varies.

If anyone told me at the start of the show that the characters would wind up where they did at the end of the first season, I would have told them they were crazy. But Milch did a beautiful job of creating believable character arcs for almost everyone and they felt totally organic.
God, I miss Deadwood. Wish HBO had given Milch his 4th season so he could have finished his masterpiece.
