I just didn't like Al. He scares me. :(

(Anonymous) 2015-07-16 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm watching the show for the first time and I hate him, he's a piece of shit, but at the same time he's my favorite character. I fucking love every time he's on screen.

You've perfectly summed up my feelings.

I'm thinking I should watch this. I love characters like that.

Late but - you should. Al is so awesome and so horrific, and he has speeches and line that you'd swear are lifted from Shakespeare. The whole show is amazing.

Funny you should mention Shakespeare. Henry V was what first made me realize how much I adore the contrast of speeches with horrible meanings but beautiful language. I still love the speech that ends with "His jest will savor but of shallow wit; When thousands weep more than did laugh at it".

Al was scary.

He was also strangely compassionate.

What show is this, please?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-16 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Deadwood.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-16 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. :)

I loved the show, general population of anywhere from anti-heroes or grumpy but good people to outright assholes regardless.

But then, they still had moments of compassion, and even when they were being outright assholes never made decisions that had me wondering how they weren't dead from stupid yet. They might have been ruthless but they were still acting in positive directions in their own self interest, unlike other shows where people just kept making the worst possible decisions ever.

It really was really violent, though.

tl;dr I loved it, but I can sympathize with the OP.

Aw, I love this show.

That's really too bad. It's an incredibly well-acted show. So intense. And it shows Timothy Oliphant at his finest. I mean, compared to Deadwood, Justified is a comedy.

I like the intro song. That's all I know about this show, lol.

How violent are we talking, exactly? Is it extreme gore or is it just realistic enough to be disturbing? My threshold for extreme violence weirdly varies.

A bit of both? More often realistic, but there's at least a couple instances of extreme gore in three seasons, one of them that I can think of involving an eyeball, in case that's your run and hide moment.

I can't really explain why my tolerance for violence varies. I got through all seasons of Spartacus and while there were definitely moments I wouldn't want to re-watch I was hooked enough on the story that the violence wasn't a dealbreaker. I might look into this show anyway. Thanks for the info!

I completely agree with you. I had to stop watching eventually because it was just too unrelentingly unpleasant.

Although if you wait a while, there's an older female Calamity Jane type character who gives the show heart for a while.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-16 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched the first 5 or so episodes - I was so BORED I had to stop. Also, a few of the characters really annoyed me. I don't actually remember it being that violent, but I'm probably just ludicrously desensitized.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-16 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Deadwood. Rewatching it for the 3rd or 4th time now...

(Anonymous) 2015-07-17 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, OP, you should have hung in there. Characters you think are unpleasant turn out to be anything but and vise versa. I'd suggest trying to hang in there until episode 4 and then see how you feel. I always think that is the litmus test with Deadwood. If you find you're unmoved after that particular episode and how things unfold, you're right, Deadwood is not for you.

And the Season 1 finale was like a little love letter to the viewers who stayed. If anyone told me at the start of the show that the characters would wind up where they did at the end of the first season, I would have told them they were crazy. But Milch did a beautiful job of creating believable character arcs for almost everyone and they felt totally organic.

God, I miss Deadwood. Wish HBO had given Milch his 4th season so he could have finished his masterpiece.

YES! Because how it ended just...sucked. I loved that show so much.

NGL, when I first looked at this secret, I thought it was the cast of Justified dressed a little strangely.

I'm a bit of a wuss (this is the most "adult" show I've watched ever and I had to tab away during some of the more violent bits) but I stuck it through to the end because my girlfriend loves this show and it's really damn good. But it's not for everyone, and I understand, OP.
