Big King fan myself, and i can definitely get this! The setting for the Dark Tower is so different from what he usually write, i think that might be what makes the series resonnate differently with you?

It's probably the same reason why some King fans don't like the series, i guess. As far as King books go, the Dark Tower is pretty unique, in setting and in tone. Eyes of the Dragon is kinda similar in that regard, imo, even though it's more of a fairytale.

(also i definitely agree: Roland is precious. :))

Firstly: OMG OMG OMG A DARK TOWER SECRET!!!!!!

Secondly: Your reaction makes perfect sense considering that The Dark Tower is unquestionably King's magnum opus. I'm not really a fan of his works (hated Carrie and Christine, was underwhelmed by almost everything else of his that I've read), but The Gunslinger is one of my favourite fantasy novels of all time, and the rest of the series is pretty damn good too.

I think it's partly because although, as you said, this series showcases King's shortcomings just as much as anything else by him, it more than makes up for it with all the awesome worldbuilding and characterization and backstory and basically everything. If I were to rank all the SFF on my bookshelves from most creative to least creative, The Dark Tower would definitely get a very high ranking. It proves that regardless of any flaws that may exist in King's writing, his brain is extremely capable of coming up with wonderful, fantastic things.

(Thank you for giving me an excuse to gush about these books, btw. <3)

Can I just give you the pro-tip of not reading book five and past that? I was so invested that I forced myself to read the last three books, but my god are they awful.

Well that's disappointing.

So disappointing! During the first few books I recommended the series to everyone. And then book five came and I was like "Well, I regret that decision now." And then I kept reading hoping that they'd get better but I'm pretty sure they just got progressively worse.

They are his best books, although that's damning with faint praise.

I wish I'd liked them more.

King USED to be great. Carrie is pretty solid, The Dead Zone is *excellent,* ditto The Shining and The Stand. He started sucking sometime in the mid-'80s, right around when Shit came out (you know, the one where the lovable pre-teen losers all bond in the face of evil by running a train on the token female in the group and we, the readers, are supposed to think this is a good thing). Tommyknockers was kind of awful as well. I gave up on him for a while, then tried The Regulators which I threw across the room, it was so terrible. He's always had terrible issues with women--so many of them are these castrating or hysterical types and SO many of the male characters fantasize about violence against women. If he'd had a solid editor who wasn't afraid to stand up to him, it would've been better for his work but when he got really big in the late '70s, that was where he started getting worse, IMO.

11 22 1963 is pretty fantastic. As is Insomnia. I agree about a lot of his books, the worst for me was Gerald's Game. That was vile.

I'm the opposite, OP. Love all his other works, don't care much for the Dark Tower series. Go fig.
