To be fair, back in the 30s/40s no one would want to date such a sick, poor guy. He may have the biggest heart of gold, but he was probably going to be dead within two years.

These days, most of his health problems could be easily managed plus he could take advantage of the hipster look.

I haven't seen the first movie in a long time, did he actually have consumption or something? I thought he was just sort of generally unhealthy, not actually someone with a fatal disease

I expect he would have died quite young. Several polio epidemics occurred in the late 40s and 50s. If anyone would die from that, it'd be Steve.

Wait a minute, surely he HAD scarlet fever? Doesn't look like he has it at the time he's assessed.

That's like excluding someone for having had chicken pox as a kid...

Scarlet fever, like chicken pox actually, can create longer lasting problems in a small number of people. Plus, all those add up to a very weak immune system.

So is it better to *not* get chicken pox at all then? I remember my mom exposing me to a kid who had it so that I would get it while I was still a young child, rather than later, because apparently having chicken pox as an adult is worse than having it as a kid. Now do kids usually get vaccinated so they don't get it ever?

No, it is better to get it. That doesn't mean that someone with a compromised immune system won't get effected differently.

I know he wasn't sturdy enough to go to war but I was under the impression he wasn't going to drop dead at any moment (as fanfic would have it).

Anyway, all of that would be a deal-breaker to a woman looking for a steady, but a few dates shouldn't be out of the question.
