I'm not fond of soulmate premises for a variety of reasons, mostly involving my suspension of disbelief. I mean, it's a little odd to think that there's just one person who makes the absolute perfect match with you, but people believe that in the real world, so whatever. But making it a natural law for everyone, you have to start wondering about the details. Specifically about how many people could ever even *meet* their soulmates.

I mean, what if my soulmate was living in a small, poverty-stricken village in rural India, and I was working as a web designer in San Francisco? I don't see any reason someone like that *couldn't* be a wonderful person I'd click with, after all. Or what if my soulmate died in a car crash five years ago, before we had a chance to meet? What if we don't share a common language? What if they're eighty years old when I'm twenty, or vice-versa? What are the odds that the one person in the world who's the most perfect for me was born within a limited span of years from myself, in the same part of the world, in circumstances where we were actually likely to cross paths? What are the odds, for that matter, that it could be set up so that everyone in the world could be paired off this way? The logistics would be mind-boggling.

And if there's only one person in the world for you, will you be just miserable forever if you can't find them? What if they die, and you know you're never ever going to find someone as perfect for you as them, and never be as happy again? That could increase the suicide rate horribly. If you find someone you really like, but don't get the soulmate match with them, do you just give up on the relationship, and wait for the mystical destiny to take control of your life?

I know I'm overthinking what's meant to be a fluffy romantic fantasy, but I've just never found a premise like that which didn't strike me as too implausible to read -- or have too many unfortunate implications that made me feel skeevy.

You know, there are soulmate fics out there that explore all the implications you suggest. I know I've written a story where a soulmate died as a child, and the implications for the surviving soulmate. Like any other trope, it can be well written, deeply explored, and complicated. Or it could be the fluffy feel-good that sometimes that's all people want. There's nothing wrong with that.
