Some of us prefer the term black. I don't like African-American for myself. My ancestors were stolen from Africa. I've never been there. I feel it's inappropriate for me to take on that title when others who were born there deserve it better. We are all black. We all have African heritage. But those who came from the Motherland really are African-Americans or, if they choose, they're just Americans, just like me.

... okay, I was objecting to "blacks" (plural) because it's dehumanizing in the same way calling a group of gay people "gays" is dehumanizing

nayrt and I'm not black but I'm gay, and in ayrt's example I get what she means. When straight people say "gays" it kind of rubs me the wrong way. I prefer "gay people". I think that's what ayrt was suggesting as the better alternative - "black people" as opposed to "blacks", but again I'm not black so idk.
