Complaining about foreign food

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I don't want to be that white person giving an indian shitty ratings because the food was "too spicy", but...

I ordered online and one of the dishes was so incredibly salty I just couldn't get it down. Now I don't have much experience with indian food and don't know if it's supposed to be that way? But I'd like to give the restaurant a rating nonetheless.

Should I mention it or not? Is there a right way to approach this? (I know it's a minor issue in my case, but in general)

What did you have exactly?

Samosas with lamb was the thing that was too salty for me. The filling was fine, but the crust just didn't work D:

Overly salty food is a universal thing. You can say that the dish you had was too salty for your liking.

I'd say being too salty universally makes not good food, regardless of the cuisine. And as someone who enjoys Indian food, I don't think it's saltier than other foods.

Just out of curiosity, what did you order that was too salty?

Some things in Indian cuisine are meant to be very salty, so just want to check to see whether or not it was actually a fuck up or what.

I wrote further upthread, samosas with lamb! The crust was the salty part.

Hmm. Was there a chutney that they came with? Sometimes they are served with a tamarind chutney that is sort of like a sweet and sour sauce, so they might have made the crust extra salty to accommodate that sourness?

That's the only thing I can think of.

They came with... ketchup. I don't like ketchup very much so I didn't use it, but that could be the reason.

Yeah, that's definitely the reason. They are really meant to be eaten with something that's sweet and sour (like exceptionally tangy- tamarind is very sour).

I've had samosas both with and without the tamarind sauce, and I've never found them too salty without the sauce either? (Greasy, yes, but not super salty.)

That's fair. Just saying there could have been a reason other than it being a fuckup. I'm not the chef; I don't know what the process was.

Yeah, it's hard to tell over the internet, could be either.

I'll stay on the safe side then and assume it's my own fault. The rest of the food was great, so I'm not gonna rate them bad for me not knowing what a dish would taste like.

Thanks for the help!

Yeah i've definitely never had salty samosas, but maybe they altered the recipe for a different palette, idk.

The last time I ordered samosas, I thought they were pretty salty. So maybe they are just meant to be that way?

My advice is just don't. Even if the food really was too salty, you'll still eventually get found and raked over coals for being a white person complaining about Indian food.

Same amount of coal raking as a white fanfic writer naming a kitten after Indian food?

Wait what is this? I need to hear more.

About 5 years ago fanfic writer named Gyzym wrote an Inception fic where Yusef finds a kitten near a trash can that contained the remains of vindaloo. He named the kitten that because it smelled like the vindaloo that had gone bad.

Bossymarmalade comes in rakes Gyzym over the coals over it in their journal. Gyzym apologizes and fixes the mistake in their fic and someone down the line Aja had to stick her nose in it.

What even...?

I can only skim that long-ass post and I mostly skipped the stuff about torture locations(?) since I don't really know the fic, but the part about names and Indian food is just the definition of reaching.

Y'know, awhile back I read a fic in which someone named their pet pig Bulgogi. At the time I just thought it was funny, but in light of this perhaps it was actually "really racist". What a slight to my culture.

It shouldn't be a race issue. If the food isn't good, it just isn't good. No one likes food that is too salty. I'm not indian, but I know for a fact that good indian food is definitely not super salty.
