Well, it does? Because of a thing called racism? Even if she weren't disadvantaged in the economic sense, which nobody said she would have to be if she were black.

If she was Clarice Starling she would have been brought up poor. Because that is Clarice's back story: poor West Virginia, pulled herself out of poverty by through hard work and determination.

If they changed her back story as well as her color then they might as well have gone whole hog and given her a new name too.
