I've heard that was a common thing... in very old movies that were made before all our parents were born and most of which are long gone now. It doesn't seem relevant to apply to anything current.

For about 25 years, starting in the early 30s, American film studios self-censored themselves by following a code that required characters who were considered evil or immoral to be shown to be punished in some way, or at least not portrayed sympathetically. This affected a lot of storytelling decisions, not just how (implied to be) gay characters were depicted, and it was all-around pretty stupid and did not last.
