Apparently, reducing someone's hours to zero until they quit is a common thing. It means they avoid having to give you any kind of severence (assuming they would give you that in the first place) and probably helps avoid lawsuits about being fired unfairly. I once had a job where a thingie I had to read before starting said that if my work was unsatisfactory, my hours would be reduced. Not that I'd be fired or required to get more training or denied a promotion - just that my hours would be reduced.

As for why you, specifically, are being squeezed out, who knows? Hiring and training new people sucks for store management, but corporate does not care because they don't have to deal with it directly. Maybe they consider workers so disposible that they prefer stores just keep hiring new people until they find folks who are magically already good at everything and don't need to improve. Maybe their policy is to keep turnover high so most of their employees are new and won't be asking for raises and promotions. Maybe they are trying to avoid having more workers than they absolutely need on the clock while things are in a slump. Maybe they think mixing up the workforce will improve things and they baically want to throw workers at the wall until some of them stick.
