What about them sounds terrible?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-19 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
the main character is named Cormoran Strike

fuck me, that's terrible

(Anonymous) 2015-07-19 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe to you. To me it's just a name.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-19 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it is acknowledged in the story that it's a pretty terrible name an there is an explanation in the story for why his name is terrible.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-20 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Is "Strike" explained, or just Cormoran?

Stupid first names make sense. Parents can make stupid decisions. But I kind of doubt "Strike" is a real last name, and even if it is, I get tired of characters having these names that are obviously chosen because they sound "cool" to the author.

It's his real last name. His mother pretty much got married so she could HAVE the cool last name.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-19 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
his mom was a drug addict

they, uh, generally don't make the best decisions

(Anonymous) 2015-07-20 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
He doesn't have a mother. He's a fictional character. JK Rowling named him. She could have named him something that wasn't so fucking stupid.

Seriously -- it seems her penchant for goofy names bleeds over into her adult works too.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-19 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry Potter is a goofy name?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-20 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Your comeback would be stronger if you hadn't very obviously chosen one of the more normal sounding names in the entire series. Unfortunately, anyone who's even passingly familiar with it will know that there are plenty of examples of goofy names in the Harry Potter books, so...

I personally have a "goofy name"*, I think you are being silly and judgmental.

*it is so rare that two people in the USA have it. and less then 10% of anyone I have ever met can HEAR the correct pronunciation. But all anyone ever says is "What a pretty name!"

(Anonymous) 2015-07-20 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
This. I have low standards for thriller/mystery novels but damn, that was a dumb name.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-20 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatever, though. Mystery-novel protagonists having ridiculous names is one of the most sacred traditions of our literature. Rowling's just paying respect to her elders.
