Stop putting author's notes in the middle of chapters. Either preface the chapter with the information on how that popstar you like totally inspired the hair cut of one of your characters, or stick it at the end. You can get away with addressing the reader directly in first person narratives only, and then only in-character. Anything you have to say as a writer you should not be breaking into the middle of a chapter to tell us.
