I love Utena. I discovered it on a summer trip to Japan while I was in college during its original airing (which kind of makes me feel old now), and it utterly enraptured me. I engaged in the dread process of mailing around for fansubs just to try to get the full story. I remember watching some of the final episodes on cheap TVs in darkened dorm lounges, and loving every minute.

But I really don't know about a modern remake. Is it perfect? No. It's a great series, but it's got its weak spots. But is there any way I think a modern remake could reasonably be expected to improve on it? Not really. Some of the best parts about it -- the directing, the music, the stylization -- would either have be direct copies, or be pale echoes that just remind me how good the original was. I mean, I could be wrong, but I don't think it's likely they'd manage to make it better.

I'd love to see the fandom a little more active, but I'm fairly happy just letting the show be what it is, and looking forward for new things. (If you want more Ikuhara, Yurikuma Arashi was rather good, though not quite matching Utena.)
