I used to watch that series obsessively. I still don't understand the series finale.

Spoilers andTW sexual violence

(Anonymous) 2015-07-21 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
My interpretation in short: after the whole Anthy stabs Utena-thing (classic example of women upholding patriarchal violence as a strategy of survival)Utena decides to no longer take part in the game (smashes the ring) of patriarchal exploitation and instead, employing compassion (tears), removes its pillar: the ultimate penetreable female anthy from her position as perpetual victim and foundation of patriarchal power. what follows is the wrath of men turning on the one who could not rein in their woman's sexuality (Akio gets stabbed) and then on utena in a probably fatal corrective rape, because she has transgressed against the rules of man=penetrator woman=must be penetrated and actually removed a female from this cycle.
Going along with Jung's psychology and Hesse's Demian, Utena, at least on a certain level, is the archetype of the guide. Through her death Anthy internalizes her and finds her again within herself, finally leaving the golden cage/coffin of childhood as an adult woman.
